JaapMitra

Naam jap counter · JaapMitraजापमित्र

A mala for the days you forget to carry one.

Open JaapMitra and you are counting within a second. The whole screen is the bead, and every one is felt, not looked at.

Tap the mala. That is the whole app.

Why

Prayer first. App second.

Most jap counters we tried had it the other way round: ads between beads, a sign-up before the first count, small buttons that need your eyes.

For centuries the mala has been a quiet companion: 108 beads, one mantra, one breath at a time. JaapMitra is meant to keep that. It is a place to count, and then it gets out of the way.

In use

Three screens you will see most.

The counter: a ring of 108 beads filling with saffron, 72 of 108, today's Jaap 612 of 1,080, a 22 day streak.
The counter. A real 108-bead mala fills as you chant. Made a mistake? Undo it.
A 40-day Sankalp on day 23, with a row of completed days.
A Sankalp: a set number of Jaap, every day, for 11, 21 or 40 days. Each finished day is ticked off.
Blackout mode: a pure black screen showing only the mantra and 72 of 108.
Blackout mode. Pure black, two buttons, nothing that lights the room.

After dark

Chant with your eyes closed.

Evenings are when many people sit down to jap, and a bright screen is the last thing the room needs. Blackout mode shows a black screen. Tap anywhere, press a volume button, or use the button on your headset, and a small buzz tells you the bead was counted.

  • Tap anywhere on the screen
  • Volume buttons, headset button or a Bluetooth clicker
  • A stronger buzz at the end of every mala

What's in it

Small, and complete.

Your mantra
21 mantras come built in, written in Devanagari: Ram, Radha, ॐ नमः शिवाय, Hare Krishna, Gayatri, Mahamrityunjaya, Waheguru and more. Add your own in any script, each with its own mala size: 27, 54, 108 or your number.
Sadhana
A daily goal, and a Sankalp when you want a vow. Streaks come with grace days: every seven days in a row earns one, so a missed day does not erase the run. Upcoming Ekadashis and festivals offer a Sankalp that fits them.
Progress
A chart by day, week, month or year, a habit grid, lifetime milestones from your first 1,008 Jaap to a crore, and a year in review you can share, if you want to.
Meditation
A session timer and a calm loop, either bundled or your own recording, repeating for the whole sitting.
Stories
Seven short original retellings in English and Hindi, with larger text and read-aloud.
Reminders
Daily, streak and goal nudges, and a note at 6 am on Ekadashi and festival days. All scheduled on the phone itself.
Languages
English, हिन्दी, मराठी, ગુજરાતી, ਪੰਜਾਬੀ, தமிழ் and తెలుగు, including the notifications.
Make it yours
13 colour themes, a home screen widget, a lock-screen +1 button on iOS 17 and later, and your own photo behind the counter.
Backup
Export everything as a readable file and restore it whenever you like. It checks the file before it replaces anything.

Private

  • No account.
  • No ads.
  • No internet needed. It works fully offline.
  • Your mantras stay on your phone.

Your devotion is nobody's business. Every mantra and count stays on your device, and only leaves in a backup you choose to export. The app sends anonymous usage stats - which screens and features get used, never what you chant - and you can turn that off in Settings. Read the privacy policy.

Questions

Asked about JaapMitra.

Is JaapMitra free?

Yes. JaapMitra is free, with no ads, no subscription and no account. Download it and you are counting within a second.

Why does a mala have 108 beads?

108 is the traditional count of a japa mala in Hindu and Buddhist practice, so one round of a mantra is 108 repetitions. JaapMitra defaults to 108, and you can set 27, 54 or any number of your own.

Can I count Naam Jap without looking at the screen?

Yes. The whole screen is the button, so a tap anywhere counts a bead. A gentle haptic marks every bead and a stronger one each completed mala, and you can also count with the volume buttons, a headset button or a Bluetooth clicker.

What is a Sankalp?

A Sankalp is a vow: a set number of Jaap every day for a set number of days, such as 11, 21 or 40. JaapMitra tracks each day for you and suggests Sankalps for upcoming Ekadashis and festivals.

Which mantras are built in?

21 mantras come built in, written in Devanagari, including Ram, Radha, Om Namah Shivaya, Hare Krishna, Gayatri, Mahamrityunjaya and Waheguru. You can add your own in any script, each with its own mala size.

Does JaapMitra work offline?

Yes. Counting, your mantras, Sankalps and history all work with no internet connection, and everything you chant stays on your phone.

Does JaapMitra collect my data?

Your mantras, counts and history never leave your phone, and there is no account. The app sends anonymous usage stats - which screens and features get used, never what you chant - and you can turn that off in Settings.

Which languages does JaapMitra support?

English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu, including the reminder notifications.
