Introducing JaapMitra: a peaceful digital mala for your daily Naam Jap
1 October 2026 · 3 min read
Bhakti ka saathi, har din.
For centuries, the mala has been a quiet companion: 108 beads, one mantra, one breath at a time. But most of us now carry our day in our pocket, and the mala often gets left behind. JaapMitra (“friend of jap”) is built for that moment: a calm, private digital mala that is ready the second you open it.
Why we built it
Most jap counters we tried felt like apps first and prayer second: ads between beads, sign-ups before the first count, small buttons that need your eyes. We wanted the opposite. Open the app, and you are counting within a second.
What makes it different
The whole screen is the button. Tap anywhere to count a bead. No aiming, no looking. A gentle haptic marks every bead and a stronger one marks every completed mala, so you can chant with your eyes closed and still know where you are.
A real mala. A 108-bead mala fills as you chant. Prefer 54 or 27? Set any mala size you like. Made a mistake? Undo it, add counts by hand, or reset the current mala.
Chant in the dark. Blackout mode gives you a pure black screen with just two buttons, so you can chant at night without lighting up the room. Meditation mode adds a session timer and calming music, either the built-in loops or your own recording.
Your mantra, your script. 21 sacred mantras come built in, in Devanagari: Ram, Radha, Om Namah Shivaya, Hare Krishna, Gayatri, Mahamrityunjaya, Waheguru and more. Add your own in any script, each with its own mala size.
Sadhana, not just a number. Set a daily goal, take a Sankalp (a vow of 11, 21, 40 days or more), and watch each day get ticked off. Streaks, charts, a habit grid and lifetime milestones, from your first 1,008 Jaap to a crore, show how steady your practice has become.
Made for India’s languages. English, हिन्दी, मराठी, ગુજરાતી, ਪੰਜਾਬੀ, தமிழ் and తెలుగు, including the reminder notifications.
Private by design
Your devotion is nobody’s business. JaapMitra has no account and no ads. Everything you chant stays on your device and works fully offline. The only thing the app sends is anonymous usage stats - which screens and features get used, never your mantras or counts - and you can turn that off in Settings. You can export a readable backup and restore it whenever you like.
Also in the app
- Seven short devotional stories in English and Hindi, with read-aloud
- Reminders for your Jaap, your streak, and Ekadashi and festival mornings
- A home screen widget, and a lock-screen +1 button on iOS 17+
- Counting with volume buttons, a headset button or a Bluetooth clicker
- 13 colour themes, and your own photo behind the counter
