JaapMitra

JaapMitra

Privacy Policy

JaapMitra is a digital mala and naam jap counter. It has no account and no cloud sync: your mantras, counts and practice history stay on your device. The only thing it sends is anonymous usage analytics, which never include what you chant and which you can turn off. This document explains precisely what that means.

Last updated

Short version: what you chant stays on your device. JaapMitra has no accounts, no cloud sync, no advertising and no servers of our own. Your mantras, counts, Sankalps, recordings and history are never sent to us. The App sends anonymous usage statistics - which screens and features get used - and you can switch that off in Settings at any time.

Summary

This privacy policy describes how Codivo Labs (“we”, “us”) handles information in connection with the JaapMitra - Naam Jap Counter application for iOS and Android (the “App”). The App was previously published as “Naam Jap Counter - Smaran”; this policy covers both names.

The App lets you count repetitions of a naam or mantra on a digital mala, keep built-in and custom mantras, set daily goals and Sankalps, track streaks and progress, meditate with a timer and music, read stories, receive reminders, and back up your data to a file. All of this happens on your device. We do not operate an account system, a sync service, or any other backend for the App.

The one exception is anonymous usage analytics, provided by Google Firebase and described below. It tells us which screens and features are used so we can improve the App. It never includes your mantras, their names or text, your counts, or anything you record or write.

Data we do not collect

To be unambiguous, the App does not collect, transmit, or store on any server any of the following:

  • Your name, email address, phone number, or any other contact information
  • Account credentials - the App has no accounts and no sign-in
  • Your mantras, their names or text, your Jaap counts, malas, goals, Sankalps, streaks, or practice history
  • Your voice, your recordings, or audio files you add as meditation music
  • Advertising identifiers (IDFA or Android advertising ID) or device fingerprints
  • Precise location
  • Photos, contacts, calendars, or health data
  • Payment or financial information

The App contains no advertising and does not track you across other companies' apps or websites.

Anonymous usage analytics

The App uses Google Analytics for Firebase to understand, in aggregate, how the App is used. This setting is on by default and can be turned off at any time in Settings → Share anonymous usage stats. When it is off, the App sends no analytics events at all, including Firebase's own automatic events.

When it is on, the App sends:

  • Screens viewed, as generic screen names (for example “stories”), never the content shown on them
  • A small set of feature events: a mala completed, a Sankalp started (with its length in days and its daily goal as plain numbers), a custom mantra added, Auto Jaap started, onboarding completed, and a rating prompt shown
  • Information Firebase collects automatically: a random app-instance identifier, first open and session events, app version, device model, operating system version, language, and approximate country or region derived from your IP address

We have configured Firebase so that it does not collect the advertising identifier on Android or the vendor identifier on iOS, does not share data for ad personalisation, and does not register with ad networks. Google does not log or store your full IP address for Analytics. We see only aggregated reports and cannot identify you from them.

Google processes this data on our behalf under the Firebase privacy and security terms. Analytics data is retained for no longer than 14 months, then deleted automatically.

What is stored on your device

The App keeps your practice on your device, inside its own protected storage area, which the operating system keeps inaccessible to us and to other apps.

WhatWhyHow long
Your mantrasBuilt-in and custom mantras, each with its own mala size and running total.Until you delete them or the App
Your Jaap historyCounts, malas and sessions over time, used for streaks, charts, the habit grid, milestones and your year in review.Until you clear it or delete the App
Goals and SankalpsYour daily goal and any Sankalp you have taken, with day-by-day progress.Until you change them or delete the App
Recordings and added soundsYour own chant or a sound file you choose, played as meditation music.Until you remove them or delete the App
PreferencesTheme, language, sound and haptics, reminders, story favourites and text size, and whether you have seen the introduction.Until you change them or delete the App
Error logA short technical log of errors, used only if you choose to send a diagnostics report.Overwritten over time, or deleted with the App

The home screen widget and, on supported iPhones, the lock-screen counter show your current mantra and today's count. They read from the App's own storage on your device.

Removing the App from your device deletes its storage area and everything in the table above along with it. Make a backup first if you want to keep your history.

Microphone, speech and notifications

The App asks for a permission only when you use the feature that needs it.

  • Microphone. Used to record your own chant as meditation music, and to dictate a mantra's text. Recordings are saved on your device only.
  • Speech recognition. Dictation runs on your device. Your voice is never sent to us, and the App does not fall back to online recognition - if your phone has no offline model for your language, the App tells you so instead.
  • Notifications. Daily reminders, streak and goal nudges, and Ekadashi and festival notes are scheduled locally on your device. No push notification service is used and nothing is sent to a server.
  • Read-aloud. Stories are read aloud by your device's built-in text-to-speech engine, under the settings and privacy terms of that engine's provider.

You can withdraw any of these permissions in your device settings at any time.

Backups, sharing and diagnostics

These features move data off the App only when you choose to, and only to a destination you pick. None of them sends anything to us unless you choose to send it to us.

  • Backup and restore. “Create backup” saves a readable JSON file with your mantras, Jaap history, goals and settings to a place you choose, such as Files, Google Drive or iCloud Drive. That file is then held by the service you saved it to. Restore reads a file you pick and checks it before replacing anything.
  • Sharing. Sharing your year in review, a story or the App opens your device's share sheet. What you share, and with whom, is up to you.
  • Diagnostics report. If you choose “Send diagnostics”, the App prepares a report with the App and phone versions, your settings and the App's error log. It contains no mantras, counts or notes, and is shown to you in full before you send it by email or share it as a file. If you email it to us, it is handled as described in If you email support.

Information Apple or Google may collect

The App is distributed through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Apple and Google operate their respective stores and platforms, and each collects its own information under its own privacy policy - which we do not control.

  • If you choose to share diagnostics and usage information with developers in your device settings, Apple or Google may make aggregated, anonymised reports available to us - for example total downloads or crash counts by app version. These reports do not identify you and we cannot link them to any individual.
  • The App may occasionally ask you to rate it, using Apple's or Google's own review prompt. If you leave a review, that review and the display name attached to it are published by Apple or Google.

For details of what each collects, see Apple's privacy policy and Google's privacy policy.

Third parties and SDKs

The only third-party service the App sends data to is Google Analytics for Firebase, as described in Anonymous usage analytics. The App bundles no advertising, attribution or crash reporting SDKs.

We do not sell, rent or trade personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.

If a future version of the App introduces any feature that collects more data or uses a server of ours - for example an optional cloud backup - we will update this policy before that version is released and make the change clear in the App itself.

If you email support

If you email support@codivolabs.com, we receive whatever you send: your email address, your message, and anything you attach such as a screenshot or a diagnostics report.

  • Purpose. We use it solely to answer you and to fix the problem you reported.
  • Legal basis (where the UK GDPR or EU GDPR applies). Our legitimate interest in providing support for our software.
  • Retention. Support correspondence is kept for up to 24 months so that we have context if you write again, then deleted.
  • Recipients. Our email provider processes the message in order to deliver and store it. We do not pass it to anyone else.

Children's privacy

The App is suitable for all ages and does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction). The anonymous usage analytics described above do not identify anyone, and a parent or guardian can turn them off in Settings. If you believe we hold information about a child through support correspondence, contact us and we will delete it.

Security

Your practice data stays on your device inside the operating system's sandbox. There is no server of ours to breach, no account to compromise, and no database of your mantras or counts to steal. Analytics data is sent to Google over an encrypted connection.

You remain responsible for the security of the device itself - a device passcode and up-to-date system software - and of any backup file you export.

Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, port, or restrict the processing of your personal data, to object to processing, and to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. These rights arise under laws including the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation, the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended, and India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act.

Your practice data is on your device, so you control it directly: export it with “Create backup” and delete it by clearing it in the App or removing the App. Where the GDPR applies, we rely on our legitimate interest in improving the App for anonymous usage analytics; you can object at any time by turning off “Share anonymous usage stats”. Because analytics data is anonymous and we cannot link it to you, we cannot retrieve or delete individual records, but turning the setting off stops all further collection. We do not sell personal information, share it for targeted advertising, or use it for automated decision-making or profiling.

If you have emailed us, you may ask us to provide a copy of that correspondence or to delete it. Write to privacy@codivolabs.com and we will respond within 30 days. We will not charge you or degrade your use of the App for exercising any right.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and, where the change is material - for example if a future release began collecting more data, or introduced a server of ours - we will make it prominent in the App and in the store release notes before the change takes effect. Your continued use of the App after a change indicates acceptance of the revised policy.

Earlier versions of this policy are available on request from privacy@codivolabs.com.
